camera work: the camera work plays a big role in a music video it can varry depending on the type of band and music that they play , the camera work maybe slow moving and long shots on a slow , acoustic genre song , whilst on a dance, hip-hop track it will often be lots of quick shots and at a very fast pace. the movement and angles all reflect the bands apperance and the story (if one) will control these elements and others like shot distances, like close ups which are very popular in music videos to try ad brign the audience lose to the action and the band.
editing: when editng a music video, the editing and rendering of vdeo clips must be put together so the audience reaches and understanding in the story but also they see the band or solo artist s tat they can math the video to them. in many videos digital effects liek green screening and specal effects are used to make the artists video difrent from others of the same music genre.
the most mportant thing i belive is that the audience gain satifaction from the video , and that they like watching it over and over again because they either enjoy the story or they like to feel a conection with the band as if they were watching them live.
narrative: on a music video narrative is another key element, the story if the music video wishes to have one, needs to be short story with a sure ending , unless left on a cliffhanger which has been proven to happen before on such videos as r.kelly - trapped in the closet. but this form of music video didnt take off very well as the audience find it slightly tedious and can become boring. the story often depends on the genre music, typical and stereotypes of what storys go with what gene are often, pop - often ends with a happy ending , heavy metal- often ends wih death or a shocking moment , acoustic - boy meets girl and trys to win her heart over and fall in love, rock and pop often show the band or group on tour and living up to the rock and roll lifestyle. again in the narrative of a music video it important that the audience see the artist and accociate the video with the band , along with them feeling a conection and close to the band.
sound and genre:
the genre is the catogrey that the type of music that the artist produces the genre often depends what audience is attracted to the music for example, classical music as a genre is often watched by a elderly audience and pop as a genre is often watched by teens. the genre plays an important role in the narrative of the video produced, classical music is a mellow and chilled out type of music that which would not suit a dance and fast paced music video. the sound in the video is going to be the song which the artist wishes to promote , but small minor effects maybe added in , for example a phne call or a convosation , something that starts the narrative off and the song plays.
representation:
how the artist is represented is the type of image that the music produced (genre) and the bands actual image, for example a rock and roll bnd is ofte represented with women, alacahol, smoking and drugs. which coesrom the famos saying "sex drugs and rock and roll" and for this reason a classical atrist or composer would not want his or her music associated with this type of representation which is why classical is often represented with a reaxing chilled out type of apperance in there promotion videos.
overall there are manys elements and arguments on how a sterotypical music video shoul , i think that i have covered the elements that basic music promotional videos want to appear to be and what they appear to reflect trough image and their genre.
