evaluation

my task was to create and make a music promtional video, using a un-signed band that would be shown on diffrent music video institutions for example mtv and other music video realte tv channels, and also not forgeting music based websities like myspace, youtube and the common facebook which is widely used by many, my other task was to create 2 promotional material such as poster and a digipak/cd cover this material would publisise the band to the general public and create and intrest for them to purchase the music or look up the video.

what is required from a music promo video?
the requirments or the repertoire of elements that make a great music video are many diffrent sections, like performance, a live performance, people want to see the band performing it make the audience feel they are wit the band, and it creates a connection between the band and person as if the performance is specificaly for them and that makes them watch it overand again , and get hooked onto the song and share the likeness with freinds and family, the narative is also a elementthat makes a music video enjoyable, people als like to see a story invoved, my music doesnt really contain a story as such , but there is a element of the band going on tour to new york and the band showing them around. but there is an element of narrative there, people like the video to have a POINT/PURPOSE, it gives back t the audience somthing that they know and understand from spending their time watching the video. another element is the camera-work , this is a fairly obvious explanation, the public want to be engaged and their attention needs to be focused on the video, by doing so i choose to aviod using the same shot type twice, a diffrent angle and diffrent perspective everytime keeps the audience intrested and engaged, diffrent angles and distances liek mid shots , long shots , ad close ups all make the audience feel they are there in person and this creates enjoyment and entertaiment with all viewers and doesnt create any boredom which comes from the length of a shot, for example a shot that lasts to long and is lengthy makes it boring, keepign a great diffrence in times and lengths makes it fun to watch as the audience want to see whats next, and shot after shot it being diffrent is fun and enjoyable, another great element is editing, this is a really enjoyable part as a director and is an enjoyable to see from the public point of view, as a director i wanted mu video to be diffrent from other mmbers of my group and editing was incredibly important and i belive this is wat MADE my video a sucess, without good editing software and equipment editing would have been hard, it made my video ejnjoyable , i used a huge variety of clour schemes for example black and white , and negative effects. the tranistions from shot to shot helped my production flow smoothly, the editing is enjoyable to watch as it makes the video fun ,the variety and diffrence in style makes it unique and like befor keep the audience pay attention and keeps them inquizativeto see what happens next. actors within productions are often the band and i trid to re-create this , not by using the casio-kid members but by using to freidns to play instruments to the best of there abilty and by them doing so , creates a unique performance and shows the public what to expect from a live performance and shows the band or performer at 'work'. the mise-en-scene in msuic videos , such as props and settings/location is all covered within the narrative, props help to emphasise the story and musical equipment help to emphasise a live performace, for exmple such items as a drum kit and guitars , amplifiers these are all props, mis-en-scene is all about the small elements wihin a production that puts the cherry on the top so to speek, it helps bring good understanding and its the little tuches that count the most and attnetion to detail the audience arnt 100% focused on the bands performance and create an intrest in things not always recognisable. for example my bottle smash scene , not always seen as an intresting thing to happen , but when used it created a break for the audience and the audience wern just focusign on the band.

what infuenced my work ?
there was several influences on my work, which was divided into two types, the musical influence was aritists and bands such as example, and hello-goodbye which were all great with there unique music and image, then the inflence on the productio side came from alot of music videos by jay-z with the refrence to the new york footage which many r and b music videos use regularly, i thought that by encorporatign this element into my work would make my production unique the influence on live perofrmance came from bands like the killers and the artic monkeys where a performance is almost garenteed in ever music video by them.

how effective is the combination of my main product and my ancilary tasks?
well i belive that all my products wer very sucessfull in creation no only did i find that the quality of the products are good, but i enjoyed making them and creating them, i think that the style of my ancillary tasks and the style of music video all connect well with the genre that casio-kid are focused on (nu-rave). the band is represented in the exact style throughout the performance and in the digi-pack and poster as they would want to be. the exhibition of my products each of my proucts will be seen at different stages of a bands sucess, the poster creates a public intrest in the band, this will be exhibited in the streets and anywhere that the band wants, by creating this intrest the public will re-search casio-kid, bringing an exhibition of the music video into play which would/could be shown on music television too, enentually this leads to acual sales of the prouct on the shelves of music stores , such as hmv and other leading music retailers which means the exhibition of the product of the digi-pak. all these produts make the bands public relations and exhibitions sucessfull.
seperatly what made each product a sucess.

the production of music video - the sucessfull points i think made the video so good was its uniqueness , it is enjoyable to watch by is diverse performance settings and suroundings, the live perofmance makes a connection which is great for attention seeking and intrigation between band and public, another element is the new york footage, it gives a inside of what its liek to be casio-kid, the footage taken from new york makes a great inside to the place aswell, it creates a diffret element to focus upon, new york being on of the busiest citys, there is always somethign going on, and by attempting to capture these and showing them helped my video be diverse. the little things helped my video become good are small props and parts of acting that make the video enjoyable are great in showing casio-kid in a diffrent way.

the digi-pak, was a sucess purely because of its abstracness and is method of advertising the band , an element that i felt would be good in this product was the difrence of new york dring the day and the night-time, this made the digi-pak enjoyable to look at. which is really the main purpose of the digi-pak , having a unique case helps advertise the band in a way that akes the audience think about the band.

the poster, i think is great in advertising the band, by making the audience look for the band, advertising is a key element of the sucess of anything , without it no-one knows anything about them, the poster is great with its unique images and its colours making it stand out from other similar advertisments informing the public of bands and performances.

audience research undertook?

this was one of my weaker areas of planing the production and the exhibition of the product, i did a questionaire at the start of planning my task, these were simple quetions , that i needed to know from a range of audience ages, sex,s and lieks and dis-likes. although i had the idea already thoughtout and i knew waht i wanted to ahceive it was worthwhile making sure that i wasnt going to be the only personthat enjoys watching it. audience research is very importan in creating a audeience spesification, whic means that your idea must corespond well with them.
gaining audeience feedback from the actual final product was easy to do, i posted the video on sites like you-tube, facebook, and myspace all social networking sites that millions of people use everyday , this is great to show a production like mine as the audience can comment at the bottom of the display, my comments were very sucessfull and very posative.
when idea generating we created pitches for an out-side company called underdog managment, they then gave us feedback on what they thought about ideas, mine feedback was posative and i gave me the drive to want to suceed and make a great peice of work.
overall i thought that feedback was very posative , and i gain alot however my idea did not change of what i wanted to create , they gave me little hints and tips that helped me create a fun an unique peice of work. so in practice it was a good thing to have done but was nothing that i didnt want to do in the end.

how did the media technologies in the construction and reasearch, planning and evalution help me thoughout?
throughout each stage of the work, diffrent media helped me, sites like. unsigned.com helped me find casio-kid after my first chossen band got signed that week, the good thing about unisgned is the is no copyright restirctions there is no big record lable stopping exhibitions like mine going on, i asked for casio-kids permission just to secure the deal and they were more than happy for me to do this, i also used google to find out about nu-rave the un and coming music genre that is becoming the next best thing making casio-kids production great from a business perspective.
though prodution i used an apple mac for editing purposes which was great fun and the selection of creativity is outstanding and the cameras are all types of media technologies that are key to the sucess of my production.
the use of social networking sites like facebook , youtube , and myspace was very good and usefull for the exhibition of my production and gaining feedback, these sites are amazing for giving students like myself the chance to show what we can do with a camera and i think peopel were fairly impressed with what i could do. the skills that i picked up were manly from my as work last year, i used all i lernt there in a much more creative style and method that made my production sucessfull. folllowing with skills learnt i felt that being able to understand what will fit where in time with music and the style of shot and sound being played using this to your advantage helps people feel the reality in the video, the syncroniation of music and movements on screen flow and make the film un-confusing.
the apple mac was new technology to me , i felt i picked it up very well and made a great prodution, there were elements that the mac offered which i could have used like green-screening ect , but i used all i felt comfotable with and did some experimental stuff which was good and sucessful.
other software i used was garageband , which i edited the length of the track so it did not become a repetative song, i was able to cut and fade the track at point where it was un-noticable.
overall software and exhibiting material online is great in shwing off peoples work to members of the public at a free price and a simple method of exhibition, all it takes is a quick up-load to the net and millions of people are able to veiw your work and to also be able to rechive feedback is great , i could then make changes and inprovments to my work that make it even more enjoyable for the public, without these distribution sites and also researh engines liek google and bing , thigns wold be very difficult and time consuming. wihtout the technoloy online and offline , things would be very difficult, whch is why i think the number of media students growing is because of the technology making it all so enjoyable and not 'easy' but at a students simplicity to wich we are able to create great pecies of work to be proud of.

design ideas for music digipak

here i have designed some templates that i could use as frount covers for my digi-pak,

idea 1:

what i like:
its very diffrent to anything we have looked at before. it is great for representing the genre and this will creating a diverse digi pak which people will be keen to pick off the shelf.

what i dislike:
i thinh the style of this casee is exactly what i want to achieve on my final design. the imagers on this however are copyright which is not allowed so if doing the similar design i will have to make my own images and relate it to casio-kid.

idea 2:

What i like:
The diffrent shapes on the cover show the randomness of casio-kids look and sum up the musical genre "nu-rave".
The font of casio-kid is diverse and very diffrent.

what i dislike:
I find the cover dull and not very exciting. this is not good as people need to feel curious to pick it up from the shelf.

idea 3:

what i like:
the pictures taken of a live performance are great to show the audience

what i dislike:
the pictures shown cant be used because of copyright laws, however still images taken by me , will be fine and can be used.

marketing and promotional activites used by record labels

a record label has already figured out what they are trying to accomplish with their marketing plan - they want to sell records. If you are interested in the general, bare-bones components of a label’s plan, here they are:

A) Definition of the target market: top geographic markets and demo targets (for example, 20s to 50s, fans of quirky, literate, reflective rock and roll, hipsters, college kids, R & B fans, NPR listeners). The rest of the plan is build upon the foundation of whom you want to reach.

B) Press: Who you are targeting (broken out by national, regional, television/radio, college/zine, online) how you are going to reach them, what independent publicist you’ll use.

C) Radio: What stations are possible in your target market, what market you will go after (college? Non-commercial? Internet radio?), and who you might use as an independent radio promoter.

D) Retail: Top independent retailers in the target market, chain programs, online and special market programs.

E) Online marketing: Sites to partner with, social networking areas to get visibility on.

F) Other Areas: Synch placements, other ancillary outlets to target.

G) Materials: What collateral will be produced to help market the record.

This stuff is always in flux, but dependent on the budget labels typically produce advance CDs, retail posters, singles, and other tchotchkies. That’s the basics. Of course, it is important to realize that a label is primarily looking to sell CDs nationally and internationally. But as a point of reference, the major elements they employ could be helpful to independent artists on a much smaller scale.

infomation was collected from a numebr of top record companies i emailed and also intenet researched, the infomation was also agreed correct with a smaller local record company nearby.

the audiences feedback.

the feedback i recived off the audience was very usefull in finalizing my idea, there advice was to keep the video simple, like the song, quick shots and the reference to new york was greatly talked about. ad the band tour idea was a great idea. the new york still photos was not a god idea however , the sng needs to keep moving , having a still shot would slow the fast pace motion up, however they will become usefull when creating the ancillary tasks of producing a great cd over and magazine advertisemet.

my pitch.

i only had one film idea which i was going to follow and that was, by using my video footage i took from new york this year using some still shots aswell. i was going to create a casio-kid on our setting, i also wanted a element of humor in the video , not lots but just enough so the video stayed in the audience,s thoughts after the video is shown. after analysing the previous research i came to the conclusion that a performance aspect was needed too. these prove to be good i music videos, and also its great for the audience too feel one to one with casio-kid and really get into the music that they have produced.

the new york footage was all collected myself, the camera footage included ground shots, zooms, pans , low and high angled shots, the shots taken from our helicopter were very sucessfull and will look spectacular in the promo.

the live footage , was to be taken in an abstract place to follow on the random theme that nu-rave is geat at promoting. the live scenes need to have the correct instruments and the correctnumber of band members , the mise en scene, character outfits all had to be great and flow well with the genre too.

the element of humor i think is great for the audience to remember the video, watch again and also buy other casio-kid material, albums, downloads and go to gigs.

institutions.

there are many institutions within music video promotion. one of the greatest well known company is "mtv" MTV (initialism for Music Television) is an American cable television network based in New York City and launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs. now mtv has many other network channels specified for diffren niche markets, these are mtvs other network channels.

MTV Base is a digital music and entertainment television channel which focuses on music from the world of R'N'B, Hip-Hop, Soul and Urban.

Mtv2 was created to show more alternative types of music and older music videos than regular MTV did in 1996, priding itself on being a diverse mix of all types of music.

The channel is dedicated to dance music with music videos and programming of underground and mainstream dance tracks.

The network consisted of current hit music videos, along with a few older videos from earier in the year, as well as a few from the late 90's. The network was commercial free, with the exception of a few promos for MTV products. Currently, artist collections air throughout the day and other playlists (i.e. - live performances) air sporadically.

where casio-kid and my music promo video would fit:

my production of casio-kid wuld feature in mtv dance , with its extensive number of viewers and everyone watching loves dance music, casio-kid would be in there element here. the audience profiles all match what is expected from my audiences. the conent of the videos however are very strict, not allowing and sex, violence, drug and drink refrences till after 10pm but even then the restrictions are still quite strict. mtv boasts a no advert policy , only advertisment is from mtv,s own promotions and publications. i chose this channel based on the veiwers intrests and genre likes, casio-kid fit into the genre very well and the audience on this channel will appreciate this style of music alot more.

the ancillary tasks:
Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging, and is a registered trademark of AGI Media. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets. Because such packaging is less resistant to abrasion than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly. Licensed digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommend coating the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating, thus ensuring greater longevity.
Although less vulnerable to cracking than a jewel case, the disc tray inside the package (particularly the "teeth" of the hub which secure the disc in place) remains rather brittle and is prone to cracking if the package is crushed. Digipak-style cases grew in popularity among record labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.
Manufacturers have sought to reduce environmental impact and improve functionality by introducing recycled components into its trays; one has announced a 100% post-consumer PET tray made from recycled bottles, which also eliminates the need for the brittle "teeth". Many printers use recycled or sustainable material for the board stock.

this is an example of a digipack. these can all be made by all major cd manufactuers now and are becoming more and more populars the years go on.
