design ideas for music digipak

here i have designed some templates that i could use as frount covers for my digi-pak,

idea 1:

what i like:
its very diffrent to anything we have looked at before. it is great for representing the genre and this will creating a diverse digi pak which people will be keen to pick off the shelf.

what i dislike:
i thinh the style of this casee is exactly what i want to achieve on my final design. the imagers on this however are copyright which is not allowed so if doing the similar design i will have to make my own images and relate it to casio-kid.

idea 2:

What i like:
The diffrent shapes on the cover show the randomness of casio-kids look and sum up the musical genre "nu-rave".
The font of casio-kid is diverse and very diffrent.

what i dislike:
I find the cover dull and not very exciting. this is not good as people need to feel curious to pick it up from the shelf.

idea 3:

what i like:
the pictures taken of a live performance are great to show the audience

what i dislike:
the pictures shown cant be used because of copyright laws, however still images taken by me , will be fine and can be used.

marketing and promotional activites used by record labels

a record label has already figured out what they are trying to accomplish with their marketing plan - they want to sell records. If you are interested in the general, bare-bones components of a label’s plan, here they are:

A) Definition of the target market: top geographic markets and demo targets (for example, 20s to 50s, fans of quirky, literate, reflective rock and roll, hipsters, college kids, R & B fans, NPR listeners). The rest of the plan is build upon the foundation of whom you want to reach.

B) Press: Who you are targeting (broken out by national, regional, television/radio, college/zine, online) how you are going to reach them, what independent publicist you’ll use.

C) Radio: What stations are possible in your target market, what market you will go after (college? Non-commercial? Internet radio?), and who you might use as an independent radio promoter.

D) Retail: Top independent retailers in the target market, chain programs, online and special market programs.

E) Online marketing: Sites to partner with, social networking areas to get visibility on.

F) Other Areas: Synch placements, other ancillary outlets to target.

G) Materials: What collateral will be produced to help market the record.

This stuff is always in flux, but dependent on the budget labels typically produce advance CDs, retail posters, singles, and other tchotchkies. That’s the basics. Of course, it is important to realize that a label is primarily looking to sell CDs nationally and internationally. But as a point of reference, the major elements they employ could be helpful to independent artists on a much smaller scale.

infomation was collected from a numebr of top record companies i emailed and also intenet researched, the infomation was also agreed correct with a smaller local record company nearby.

the audiences feedback.

the feedback i recived off the audience was very usefull in finalizing my idea, there advice was to keep the video simple, like the song, quick shots and the reference to new york was greatly talked about. ad the band tour idea was a great idea. the new york still photos was not a god idea however , the sng needs to keep moving , having a still shot would slow the fast pace motion up, however they will become usefull when creating the ancillary tasks of producing a great cd over and magazine advertisemet.

my pitch.

i only had one film idea which i was going to follow and that was, by using my video footage i took from new york this year using some still shots aswell. i was going to create a casio-kid on our setting, i also wanted a element of humor in the video , not lots but just enough so the video stayed in the audience,s thoughts after the video is shown. after analysing the previous research i came to the conclusion that a performance aspect was needed too. these prove to be good i music videos, and also its great for the audience too feel one to one with casio-kid and really get into the music that they have produced.

the new york footage was all collected myself, the camera footage included ground shots, zooms, pans , low and high angled shots, the shots taken from our helicopter were very sucessfull and will look spectacular in the promo.

the live footage , was to be taken in an abstract place to follow on the random theme that nu-rave is geat at promoting. the live scenes need to have the correct instruments and the correctnumber of band members , the mise en scene, character outfits all had to be great and flow well with the genre too.

the element of humor i think is great for the audience to remember the video, watch again and also buy other casio-kid material, albums, downloads and go to gigs.

institutions.

there are many institutions within music video promotion. one of the greatest well known company is "mtv" MTV (initialism for Music Television) is an American cable television network based in New York City and launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs. now mtv has many other network channels specified for diffren niche markets, these are mtvs other network channels.

MTV Base is a digital music and entertainment television channel which focuses on music from the world of R'N'B, Hip-Hop, Soul and Urban.

Mtv2 was created to show more alternative types of music and older music videos than regular MTV did in 1996, priding itself on being a diverse mix of all types of music.

The channel is dedicated to dance music with music videos and programming of underground and mainstream dance tracks.

The network consisted of current hit music videos, along with a few older videos from earier in the year, as well as a few from the late 90's. The network was commercial free, with the exception of a few promos for MTV products. Currently, artist collections air throughout the day and other playlists (i.e. - live performances) air sporadically.

where casio-kid and my music promo video would fit:

my production of casio-kid wuld feature in mtv dance , with its extensive number of viewers and everyone watching loves dance music, casio-kid would be in there element here. the audience profiles all match what is expected from my audiences. the conent of the videos however are very strict, not allowing and sex, violence, drug and drink refrences till after 10pm but even then the restrictions are still quite strict. mtv boasts a no advert policy , only advertisment is from mtv,s own promotions and publications. i chose this channel based on the veiwers intrests and genre likes, casio-kid fit into the genre very well and the audience on this channel will appreciate this style of music alot more.

the ancillary tasks:
Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging, and is a registered trademark of AGI Media. Digipak-style packaging is often used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums and the tall DVD Digipak (DVDigipak) is used as a premium package for DVDs and DVD sets. Because such packaging is less resistant to abrasion than jewel cases, it tends to show signs of wear relatively quickly. Licensed digipak manufacturers such as domestic U.S. printer and disc replicator Oasis Disc Manufacturing recommend coating the raw printed paper with a protective UV coating, thus ensuring greater longevity.
Although less vulnerable to cracking than a jewel case, the disc tray inside the package (particularly the "teeth" of the hub which secure the disc in place) remains rather brittle and is prone to cracking if the package is crushed. Digipak-style cases grew in popularity among record labels and recording artists in the early 2000s.
Manufacturers have sought to reduce environmental impact and improve functionality by introducing recycled components into its trays; one has announced a 100% post-consumer PET tray made from recycled bottles, which also eliminates the need for the brittle "teeth". Many printers use recycled or sustainable material for the board stock.

this is an example of a digipack. these can all be made by all major cd manufactuers now and are becoming more and more populars the years go on.

representations.

researching and exploring similar represenations of casio-kid. similar bands that are very similar to casio-kid , include some of the following.

passion pit - Passion Pit is an American electronic band from . Formed in 2007, the group consists of Michael Angelakos (lead vocals/keyboards), Ian Hultquist (keyboards/guitar), Ayad Al Adhamy (synth), Jeff Apruzzese (bass/synth bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums).

like casio-kid, passion pit use many instruments to produce there songs, however passion pit has the advantage of a large number of members to the band. however the same elements are there and that the music genre is exactly the same.

Crystal Castles is an experimental electonic band from the province of ontiraro consisting of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. Crystal Castles are known for their chaotic live shows and their lo-fi, melancholic home productions.

this duo represent casio-kid very well. there is only two main members in the band, they have the same layout as casio-kid , one drummer and the synth/eletonics and vocals by the other member, tis works very well for both , the genre type is almost identical. which means that crystal castles is a great band to follow and shadow when thinking of elements of my music video.

there album covers , are very like the style of music they poduce, the pasion pit album cover is very abstract and nu-rave, its randomness and no purpose shapes, are just what the band is all about, the great thing about artists in nu-rave s that there album covers are not tring to produce an intest to everyone out there , they know that the only people that find there album covers intresting will liek the style of muic they produce, crystal castles produced this album cover. it shows the two members of the group an the band name, couldnt be more simple. like before the people that find this a great album cover is the people that listen to the music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovV_baO8gho - this is a live performance from crystal castles, the bright lights, speed of the song and the whole atmospehere is what nu-rave is all about and tis is what casio-kid produce in there live performances aswell as the promo video which i want to prdoduce for them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPpbUy-Z6o8 - this is a live performance of passion pit , howver it is not as flashy and club like as casio-kid and crystal castles would normaly do , the musical elements are very similar.with the live aspect and the nu-rave element to the track.

this is a picture of crystal castles merchandise, the tee shirt shown is great for the bands image ad publicity. the tee-shirt is very basic, stating the bands name but its bold and gets the message across, the writing style is very electronicly produced, which is the style i wish to incorporate.

overall both passion pit and crystal castles all have the elements that casio-kid have. the electronic construction of the music and the image the band has going is great for the nu-rave scene and my promo video should prove to be a sucess.

music promo video 3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saw1w-8ODKM . Calvin Harris -flashback.

this video was choosen becase it is exactly what i would like to produce for casio-kid. the narrative is intresting and follows the song lyricaly, the genre of music is very similar to casio-kid too.

camera work used within this video with calvin harris. is very similar to example with a large numer of mid shots being used also shown is a number of close up shots with calvin performing. and also showing in depth detail thoughout the narrative aswell.

samples of this are these two close up shots of calvin peforming as a dj which is what made him a top artist so showing this in a promo video is good.

another shot iv selected is a mid shot showing calvin on his boat, thinking back to what happend the previous night hence the "flashback" title of the song.

sound is the same as all the others , no additional sounds are added into the video, which i am going to tick to. as some videos that have additional sounds could be more atention seeking to the audience but can loose the whole point of a music video.

mise-en-scene used within this video is diffrent in some aspects tn the others , the performance part in calvins videos, has a number of "show girls" in , which he has used in a number of previous videos. however calvin himself does not change from his casual performance wardrobe. an exampel of the show girls is this.

narrative and performance through this video is very lyrical , calvin performing to an audience in a club , a typical place calvin is likely to be seen perfoming. also the narrative/story follows what is in the lyrics, the song is called flashback , which is repeated many times as the chorus. and this follows naratively as calvin spends his tim through the video remembering what happened the previous night, this aspect i like very much in the video.
the genre is very similar to casio-kid , the dance type of genre and calvin harris one of the main artists to have started the nu-rave scene.
this video is a great example of what i would like to achieve in my production. and wil be using this as a guid/template.

music promo video 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAgegxdVdFU , example - watch the sun come up.

i have chosen to evaluate this video for a number of reasons. the music fits with the type of genre i have chosen. the video is a mixture between real life and fantasy, and has is extremely narrative.

camera work used in this video, this video is largely filled with a number of mid shots, showing good detail of "example" the artist and whats going on in the back ground. also use in this video is a large amoutn of special effects, with what exmaple is thnking being drawn on the screen with him still in the shot . a great exebition of this is shown here.

this scene was mainly created in the editing department, with "example" having to act on a "green screen" with allowed the prodcucers to add in the hand drawn pub effect.
sound. the only sounds used in the video is the trac kits self there are no fades or added sounds adding to create effects.
mise-en-scene. the mise-n-scene used in "examples" video is just typical clothes that he would wear , when performing and not performing, the music refelcts on what example is thinking, wanting to happen. so its key that example is n his day to day clothing.
narrative and performance is very similar to what happened in the previous video, example fallen in love with the girl , and gets the girl. and the video illustrates how and why he does it. the video is very effective for the song type, pushing me more into doin a more narrative type of production. the type of style example produces sound wise is a similar genre to casio-kid , however the way he dresses himself does correspond with the nu-rave scene, however i think this is larger effective in diffirenciating his video from other producers.

my digi-pak

these are my ancillary tasks, a digi pack template with the frount back insdie left and inside right. all the pictures are taken by me so there are no copyright issues,
what i like:
the contrast of day and night on the covers.
the infomation informing the buyer to go to casio-kid,s mysapce is a nice touch that brings the audience closer to casio-kid.
the abstract colours.
the measurements give a realistic size of what the cover will be like.
what i would do diffrently:
put contents on the back cover.
show more labels that are often found on cd covers/digi pak.

analysis on three music videos.

hellogoodbye - here in your arms.

camera work in this video has a large variety of different shots and angles , and few examples are these.

this is a close up shot , these shots are great for detail and good for helping the audience to understand the narrative

these close up shots shows who the character loves as shown in the picture he is holding in his hands, the close up of the camp holadios sign explains to the audience the setting of the video and the summer of 91, suggests a time it refers back, because the song and group are a modern, and up too date genre.

other shots used in the music video are a large amount of mid-shots , which i think does alot of connecting the narrative together. for example here are two mid shots that play important roles in connecting the narrative together.

both these shots show how the character is practicing his dancing before the typical end of camp disco which is very common with this type of narrative, and the other shot shows the character asking the girl (in the picture previously) to dance. obviously there are more shots that used in the video , however i think that these two shots are the most frequently used throughout the video.

the mis-en-scene for this video is all things before the camera , all the sets, props, costumes and lighting. for this video the lighting is corresponding to the time of day , night - dark , day - light , the only artificial lighting used is in the disco scene , with all the disco equipment used and the lasers , very typical to what i shall use in my music video with casio-kid. the set is clearly an American summer camp , all things connect with this, the American settings with log cabins and a lake shown in a few shots which again is very common for an American camp setting.

the costume used in the video is very like the genre of music, some of the characters are told apart from the typical tire for an american camp uniform, shorts , high top shoes liek converse, high socks and a coloured tee-shirt.
Narrative and performance. the narrative for this video is fairly simple. set in a typical american summer camp , the main character stereotyped as being (nerd). falls in love with this girl who he belives he has no chance with, through the summer camp with the help of others he goes to the end of summer dance and dancing with the girl and gets his kiss. followed by a short performance at the very end of the video. the performance asspect is what i want to achieve in my video aswell.
genre. the genre type is an up and coming type of music branded as nu-rave, its a mixture between a dance/club track genre and a pop band genre. over the last few years this type of music has had a huge increase in followers and has developed its own style on the fans, the nerd glasses, high top shoes, bright coloured clothing. is just touching the surface of a new craze soon to take off massively.
